The grade 4’s are making clay animals. Boy are they excited to work with clay! The air drying clay is so tough to work with at first and they need to work hard to warm and soften in. This is good for their little hand muscles and good for their fine motor development. I urge them therefore to persevere with warming the clay.
The clay does not join well so they are learning to extrude parts in order to create the legs, ears and tails. The eyes and inner ears are pushed in, receding into the clay.
We have two weeks to finish these cute little animals and I look forward to seeing the end products. Though the process here is truly the focus.
